Bio:
After
graduation I too went across campus to Lipscomb, graduating in June 1967 with an
accounting degree. I worked for an insurance company as a claims adjuster for
several years. In 1971, I met Owen and we married in May of 1972. He said that
at 36 he was a confirmed bachelor, but I changed his mind quick. His mother
always said that he was her “keepsake.” This week we celebrate our 33rd
anniversary. He was a district forester with the state of Kentucky living in
Stamping Ground, a small town near Frankfort with a population of 600. That was
quite an adjustment for me after growing up in the big city of Nashville.
We were blessed with a daughter, Ashley Jane, in 1975 and two sons, Michael Carlton in 1977, and Neil Thomas in 1978. Our children all graduated from Scott County High School in Georgetown, Kentucky where they were very active in sports. Ashley played softball and basketball while the boys played soccer and ran track. Ashley was Salutatorian of her class in 1994 and Michael was Valedictorian of his class in 1996. They all received scholarships to college. We are extremely proud of all our kids and their accomplishments but most proud of the fact that they are all Christians and active in their local church.
Ashley graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1998 and is a high school teacher in Frankfort, Kentucky. She started out teaching math (her first love) and gradually was switched to all science classes. She has coached basketball and tennis.
Michael graduated from Murray State University in 2000 with an electrical engineering degree. He received his Master’s Degree from Georgia Tech in 2002 and is currently a design engineer with Texas Instruments in Houston, Texas, designing chips for cell phones. He built a new home last year.
Neil graduated from the
University of Kentucky in 2002 with a mechanical engineering degree. Since he
was on an army scholarship, he received his commission as a 2nd
Lieutenant in the army upon graduation and is currently paying back his time to
Uncle Sam. He received his promotion to 1st Lieutenant while he was
in Iraq, where he spent November 2003 until March 2004. That was a scary time
for us. He is currently stationed in Ft. Lewis, WA. He was at the top of his
class (#1 out of 148) in his officer’s basic course at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma in
2003. That was his “Valedictorian”.
None of our children are married as yet, so no grandchildren. Please, please send us some prospects. I hope they don’t wait as long as Owen did.
Except for a few years in the beginning of our marriage when I ran a small variety store in Stamping Ground, I was a “stay at home mom” until 1989 when I returned to work as an auditor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. I am now an audit supervisor with plans to retire in about 6 years. Owen retired in 1988 and in 1990 we built a new home on our 40-acre farm. Owen farms and “vegetates”. He grows vegetables, Christmas trees and tobacco. We have a you-cut Christmas tree operation. I make and decorate the wreaths in the evenings during November.
In our “spare time” we love to travel, especially cruising. We have taken cruises to Hawaii, Alaska, and Scandanavian Europe so far. In October we will be taking a Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona, Spain around Italy and the Grecian Isles ending up in Venice.
I also love working on our geneology which now goes several generations back. We took a road trip in 2003 across Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana visiting every cemetery we passed! I was able to fill in a lot of gaps in my mother’s family on that trip.
In 1996 we made our first mission trip to Honduras with the Latin American Missions group and in 1999 to Panama. Since 1999, we have also been making a mission trip each year to one of the Caribbean islands. So far we have been to Antigua, St. Kitts, St. Marten, St. Thomas, Dominica, and Nevis. This year we will return to St. Kitts.
We have worshipped at several congregations over the years but we currently attend Holly Hill Church of Christ in Frankfort, Kentucky where Owen is a deacon in charge of benevolence and missions. Several years ago I put together a color pictorial church directory of which I am extremely proud. It was very time consuming but very rewarding.
As Patty said in her bio, time does run over you. At least I feel that way at times. My mind is still young and can do anything but my body says, ”NO WAY HOSEA!” I try to walk and exercise but sometimes life just gets ahead of you.
If you are ever up this way, give us a call and come by. We have three empty bedrooms just waiting for the guests to arrive. If you want to know more, plan to come to our next “real” reunion, which I am currently planning. If you would like to help, please contact me.
